The Digging into Data Challenge is sponsored by several leading research funders from around the world that aims to address how "big data" changes the research landscape in the humanities and social sciences.

The program encourages the international research community to envision and create new infrastructures for 21st-century scholarship. Teams of researchers from at least three different participating countries submit grant applications that are evaluated by an international peer review panel. IMLS has participated in the program since 2011 and has funded the U.S.-based portions of multiple Digging into Data grants.

The Digging into Data Challenge is administered by the Trans-Atlantic Platform, a consortium of sixteen international funders of social science and humanities research from Europe, South America, and North America. The Challenge can be followed at the Digging into Data website.
