Our Mission / Vision

IMLS envisions a nation where individuals and communities have access to museums and libraries to learn from and be inspired by the trusted information, ideas, and stories they contain about our diverse natural and cultural heritage.

Our Strategic Plan

The IMLS Strategic Plan for FY 2022-2026 outlines four strategic goals that underpin the agency’s programs and services. These include being a Champion of Lifelong Learning; Strengthening Community Engagement; Advancing Collections Stewardship and Access; and Demonstrating Excellence in Public Service.

Our Board

The National Museum and Library Services Board, established by 20 U.S.C. § 9105a, advises the agency on general policies with respect to the duties, powers, and authority of IMLS relating to museum, library, and information services, as well as the annual selection of National Medals recipients.

Legislation & Budget

Most activities of the Institute of Museum and Library Services are authorized by Chapter 72 of Title 20 of the U.S. Code. As a federal agency administering discretionary federal programs, IMLS receives its funding through the annual appropriations process.

Peer Review

All proposals submitted for IMLS competitive awards are reviewed by library and museum professionals who know the needs of communities, can share promising practices, and are well versed in the issues and concerns of museums and libraries today.
