Washington, DC—IMLS Acting Director Maura Marx issued the following statement today on the passing of Charles Benton:

Charles Benton, executive, philanthropist, and founder and CEO of the Benton Foundation, was committed to using communications networks to improve the lives of people from all walks of life. Since 2012, he was an invaluable member of the National Museum and Library Services Board and brought to the group a unique perspective that reflected his active role on numerous boards and with organizations in the arts, education, and communications. As a former chairman and chairman emeritus of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, he had a deep understanding of the role of libraries and information services in providing information access. 

Charles was particularly instrumental as an advisor on the E-rate program (formally known as the Universal Service Schools and Libraries Program) which helps schools and libraries acquire Internet and phone products and services at affordable rates. At last year’s IMLS public hearing on E-rate, Charles used his considerable authority to effectively underscore the need for better broadband in libraries. We will sorely miss his kindness, unbounded enthusiasm, and dedication to public service.
