Washington, DC—The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced today that the agency's Annual Financial Report (AFR) is now available for FY 2019. The report details the health of the agency’s finances from October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2019, as required by the Office of Management and Budget.

“IMLS funding, special initiatives, and shared knowledge empowers museums, libraries, and their communities all across the country and U.S. territories,” said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. “IMLS grants help launch workforce development projects, preserve our nation’s cultural heritage, and build community partnerships that support people of all ages, skills, and backgrounds. I am pleased to share the story of the agency’s funding, and why it matters, in this year’s Annual Financial Report.”

The AFR highlights key financial impacts of the agency’s grant programs for FY 2019. Highlights from the report include:

  • The first awards under the Accelerating Promising Practices for Small Libraries (APP) funding opportunity were made, providing $1.2 million to the first 30 recipients that will address the unique needs of tribal, rural, and small libraries.

  • Applications to museum funding programs increased 15 percent in 2019, and museum grants, service awards, and cooperative agreements supported projects in 48 states and the District of Columbia.

  • The agency organized two national events to support the needs of tribal communities: a summit on broadband access, and a cultural preservation convening.

For more information about IMLS’s financial activities in FY 2019, the full report is available on the IMLS website. The agency’s detailed performance report will be available in February 2020.
