The University of Illinois, Chicago Library will digitize, preserve, and make accessible 781 audio and video recordings from their Chicago in the CITY2000 collection. The CITY2000 collection documents Chicago and its inhabitants and neighborhoods during the year 2000 through photographs, interviews, and soundscapes. Project staff and student employees will address preservation needs for collections at risk of deterioration, such as digital audio tape and magnetic tape. The university will contract with a vendor to reformat the materials, and project staff will make the materials available to the public through the university’s digital collections portal. Digitized files will be enhanced with metadata as well as audio transcripts for increased accessibility.
