Appalshop

Appalshop will digitally preserve its collection of audiovisual materials documenting the history of Appalachia. In 2023, Eastern Kentucky suffered a catastrophic flood and 80% of Appalshop’s collection was submerged in flood water. Project activities will include the cleaning and digitization of nearly 700 hours of moving image media. Staff will work with audiovisual preservation labs to perform the specialized conservation to salvage flood-damaged film and videotape. As a result of the project, staff will disseminate a case study of the flood recovery activities and digitized materials will be publicly available through the organization’s collection website.
