The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum will undertake the restoration of The Maitland, an historic passenger railway sleeping car. The museum will launch the project by with condition and safety assessments to be conducted by project staff and contracted restorers. Restoration activities will occur both on and off site, including asbestos and lead paint abatement, roof repair, floor and side repair, rewiring, conversion to roller bearings on the truck wheels, repainting, and the reinstallation of seating. Structural repairs and the remediation of hazardous materials in the rail car will help to ensure safe conditions to support access and interpretive programming for museum visitors.
