Folkstreams, one of the oldest film-streaming websites on the Internet, will build and maintain its collection of documentary films about American folk or roots cultures, while preserving them for long-term public access. The project will expand the collection by adding 25 new films, while also scanning 20 older 16mm films and upgrading them to HD 4K. The project team will also add captions, transcription, and contextual information to 20 other films that provides information about the making of the films and the people and cultural traditions that are their subjects. The Folkstreams archive represents a “Golden Age” of film documentaries about American local culture. The project will support growing academic programs in folklore, advancements in portable film technology, and that the long-term documentation of folk and roots cultures in rural and urban areas.
