Log Number: ST-252532-OMS-22

The University of Alaska Museum of the North will perform conservation treatment on Bus 142, a 1946 International Harvester K-5 bus that sat along the Stampede Trail near Denali National Park and was highlighted in the book and film, Into the Wild. Museum staff and student employees will work with conservators to mitigate damage to the bus caused by vandalism, weather conditions, and biological growths. Conservators will create a conservation plan and train students to assist with project activities. Conservation efforts will include cleaning, replacing broken components, and applying protective coatings to mitigate future damage, which will ultimately improve the safety of the bus for public exhibition.
