Mississippi Department of Archives and History

Log Number: ST-252526-OMS-22

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History will use grant funds to inventory, catalog, rehouse, and prepare a collection of archaeological artifacts for curation. The collection contains artifacts from more than 2,000 distinct sites across Mississippi, representing the 14,000-year history of human occupation in the Southeast.  Staff archeologists will supervise the project, including consultation with subject matter experts and conservators. A newly hired collections manager will catalog collections and create digitized records in a collections management database. For the project, staff will purchase new collections management software, and upgrade equipment, including the purchase computers, storage for sensitive artifacts, and a flotation tank to process soil samples within the collection.
