Wisconsin Maritime Museum

Log Number: ST-252515-OMS-22

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum will perform conservation on the submarine USS Cobia to ensure both visitor safety and the watertight integrity of the vessel. Informed by a previous underwater hull inspection, the submarine curator and other museum staff will coordinate with a project consultant to undertake conservation treatments that will address issues of corrosion and structural integrity. The project will begin with inspection, towing, and dry docking of the USS Cobia. Once the vessel is docked, conservation efforts will include sandblasting, painting, and applying cathodic protection to the hull. Upon its return, museum staff will plan and implement educational programming about this National Historic Landmark for visitors.
