Clemson University will conserve the remains of an approximately 4,200-year-old Native American dugout canoe, known as the Cooper River Canoe, or the McBride Canoe. The first stage of the project will involve a consultation event in which representatives from Native American Tribes and organizations in South Carolina will convene to examine the canoe, hear the conservation plan described in detail by project staff, and provide feedback on the plan. Following this consultation event, the project team will implement all agreed-upon modifications to the conservation and communication plan, and the documentation and active treatment of the canoe will begin. Upon completion of the canoe’s conservation treatment, Native American representatives will view the canoe, hear a summary of the treatment, documentation and research, and discuss appropriate ways to house and display the canoe in the future.
