The University of Pittsburgh School of Information Science will partner with the American Library Association on a project to increase racial and ethnic diversity in library and information sciences doctoral programs. Building on the success of the Spectrum Scholarship program, which has awarded more than 340 scholarships to date, the Spectrum Doctoral Fellowship Program will award 10 fellowship packages, including full tuition and a yearly stipend. With matching support pledged by nine other institutions, this program will also support the fellows’ professional development by offering opportunities for involvement in research and leadership activities. By the end of this three-year project, the university anticipates that it will have improved diversity in the library field, not only by supporting these 10 students, but by serving as a model and inspiration for other initiatives nationwide.
