The communities served by American libraries are growing more diverse. To better meet the needs of this rapidly diversifying user base, the University of Maryland will provide scholarships to 20 students who will enroll in the Information and Diverse Populations Concentration of that school’s Master’s of Library Science degree program. This program of study provides coursework and field experiences across the curriculum designed to help students explore diversity, inclusion, and the social issues that impact minority and/or under-represented populations. The project will also redesign some coursework, provide practitioner mentors to students, and support their attendance at diversity-related professional conferences and workshops. As a result of their study, graduates from this program will be better prepared to work with a wide range of diverse populations.
