Institute for Native Pacific Education and Culture

Log Number: MN-255688-OMS-24

The Institute for Native Pacific Education and Culture (INPEACE) will develop and design plans for a self-directed hale (house) building exhibit that will highlight and reintroduce Native Hawaiian traditional hale building knowledge, strategies, and techniques. Project activities include consulting with cultural experts to gather information and create a repository of materials and oral histories about Native Hawaiian hale building practices; creating a design reference guide; developing conceptual design layouts and blueprints; and refining and completing the exhibit design and layout. A videographer will be hired to capture oral histories and cultural practices of kupuna (elders) and renowned cultural experts in a video docuseries. The project will increase public knowledge of the traditional and contemporary science of Native Hawaiian hale building practices while supporting Indigenous communities in cultivating strategies to develop culturally relevant and informed STEM experiences.
