Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria

The Mechoopda Indian Tribe will undertake efforts to preserve and perpetuate the Maidu language in response to the loss of one of the Tribe’s last fluent Maidu speakers to COVID-19. The project will support hiring a full-time project coordinator who will collect and create new content for the Tribe’s free Maidu language app; develop new Maidu classes, workshops, and programs; and update signage in exhibits and displays at the Tribal Administrative offices to include Maidu. This timely initiative to document, share, and incorporate Maidu before more knowledge is lost will help preserve and perpetuate the Maidu language for the next generation of Mechoopda people.
