Log Number: MN-03-11-0007-11
The Karuk Tribe will use grant funding to enhance its existing museum services by funding staffing, training, and the tools needed to preserve and interpret its collection. This project is also designed to build internal capacity for planning and developing sustainable museum and cultural center operations for future generations. Specific objectives and activities include (1) accessioning the collection using standard museum software and hard copy backup; (2) stabilizing the collection with archival mounts and storage; (3) implementing climate control for optimum temperature, relative humidity, and light levels; (4) improving the exhibition gallery with the addition of a custom-built freestanding display unit; (5) introducing integrated pest management procedures to control infestations without the use of toxic treatments; and (6) long-range and strategic planning for sustainable Karuk People’s Center operations.
