Koniag, Inc. will use its funding for the Karluk One Carlia’arluku project. The Karluk One collection, housed at the Alutiiq Museum, is a uniquely well-preserved collection of wood, bone, ivory, and fiber objects pulled from a 600-year-old Alutiiq archaeological site. The primary project activity to be conducted with this grant is to create an accurate electronic catalog of the entire Karluk One collection. In the process, the staff will improve the storage of delicate objects, photograph pieces for the database, identify conservation needs, and complete condition reports and treatment plans for fragile objects. A conservator from the Alaska State Museum will assist in assessing the collection, training staff in the care of archaeological organics, and produce a written report with recommendations for collections care improvements. The process will be shared with the community via email, Facebook, lectures, and the museum website and newsletter.
