The Ozette Basketry Conservation Project will significantly improve the condition of the Makah Indian Tribe’s pre-contact artifact collection. Museum staff from the Makah Cultural and Research Center will be trained and advised by a collections manager, an archaeologist with Ozette excavation experience, and a professional conservator with experience related to the Ozette collection on artifact tag removal, cleaning, numbering/labeling, tag accuracy checks, and computerized collection inventories. Museum project staff will re-tag approximately 4,000 pre-contact baskets in the museum’s archaeological collection, which will improve the stability of the collection and simultaneously preserve the contextual information about each artifact.
