Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma
Log Number: MN-00-18-0030-18
The Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma will strengthen the community's cultural identity by instructing its members in the making of traditional Tonkawa regalia for both men and women. The tribe will hire two instructors to teach community classes to demonstrate the making of Tonkawa traditional clothing. Male participants will make the vest, breechcloth, leggings, and moccasins for their own use, and female participants will make the medallion, war paint, scalp stick, moccasins, concho belt, and apron. Following the classes, the clothing made by instructors will be displayed in the new Tribal Justice Center. Supplementing the display will be visitor kiosks, providing a description of Tonkawa clothing and ceremonies with text and pictures detailing how the clothing styles changed over time and how they relate to everyday life.
