Papahana Kuaola's Museum On-the-Go project will provide museum resources to 80 public and private school teachers and their 3,000 students on the islands of Lanai, Molokai, and Oahu to increase knowledge and understanding of Hawaiian-based science. Cultural practitioners and scientists will assist with the development of seven new units for 50 existing and 49 new discovery boxes. The units will be aligned with Hawaii State Content and Performance Standards and will be field tested with project participants in grades 3, 4, and 5. Each discovery box will contain multiple learning opportunities, including background information, activities and games, activity sheets, children's books, museum specimens, casts, artifacts and replicas, and photographs and maps. Evaluation materials will also be included to gather feedback from teachers. The discovery boxes will allow educators to teach material that might have been previously out of reach due to location or financial hardship.
