Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources

Log Number: MN-00-18-0013-18

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, through the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission, will continue to improve the utility of the Kaho'olawe Virtual Museum and Kaho'olawe Island guide mobile application. The project team will collaborate with archival and cultural specialists to expand and improve collections management, both digitally and physically; process and rehouse a special collection; and enhance the user experience with the digital applications. The team will develop a reorganization plan to provide the maximum available protection for the archive material through the installation of shelving, a work table for processing, and a dehumidifier to control environmental factors within the Archive Room. Staff will input data about the objects, and evaluate, select, and install software that is more efficient in exporting data to and modifying a webpage. Press releases, social media, and a mobile app will be used to make more people aware of the virtual museum and increase access the website. Preserving and sharing these deteriorating artifacts allows for the preservation of the Kaho'olawe culture.
