Wiyot Tribe

The Wiyot Tribe will upgrade a collections storage facility within the Wiyot Cultural Heritage Center in order to create a living regalia center that combines museum best practices with traditional care methods for Native regalia, which are considered to be alive and have very strict handling protocols. Tribal youth, working with tribal elders and a woodworking consultant, will design and build the living regalia storage room and participate in a workshop to learn about potential careers as museum professionals. Heritage Center staff will receive collections management training in order to improve their ability to properly document and care for the living regalia currently held by the tribe as well as any future additions to the collection. The new facility and collection will be made accessible to tribal members so they can interact with and learn proper care practices for the regalia in accordance with Wiyot culture.
