The Suquamish Museum, in collaboration with the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture and the Native Voices Indigenous Documentary Film Program at the University of Washington, will host a three-day cultural preservation and public education symposium on the traditional and resurging art of Native American wool weaving. The First Annual International Salish Wool Weavers Symposium will feature an impressive array of presenters and experts and reach an anticipated 125-150 attendees who will participate in academic lectures, demonstrations, interactive workshops, and a fashion show featuring traditional woven clothing. Portions of the symposium will be filmed to help capture, document, and preserve existing knowledge about this endangered art form, and a regional network of Salish weavers will be created, strengthening the Suquamish museum's role as a civic leader in the preservation and protection of Native cultural arts.
