Hula Preservation Society

Log Number: MN-00-15-0004-15

Hula Preservation Society will identify, catalog, and digitize 2,000 items donated by hula elders documenting the history of the Hawaiian Room, a New York City venue operating from 1937 to 1966 that featured talented Native Hawaiian singers, dancers, and musicians. The collection will be entered into the Society's collections management database to allow for ease of reference and use. In addition to work on the collection, stories about the Hawaiian Room and the related collections will be shared with the public through three public programs presented on three islands. As a result of the collections work and public programs, this project will help sustain historical knowledge and cultural understandings of how Native Hawaiian culture was shared with the world during the last century.
