Havasupai Tribe

Log Number: MN-00-05-0024-05

The Havasupai Tribe is located in northern Arizona at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. The tribe's economy is centered on tourism and the thousands of people who flock to the reservation every year to hike and camp in the canyon. The tribe currently operates a campground, lodge, general store, and café in the village of Supai. Access to Supai is limited and all supplies must be brought in by helicopter, foot, or horseback. For years the tribe operated a small museum within its Tourist Center. With the full support of a new Tribal Council and a grant from the Arizona Commission of the Arts, the museum will be refurbished and reopened in September 2005. With this grant, the tribe will hire a part-time director to oversee the operation and maintenance of the museum. The director will also be responsible for recruiting volunteers to assist in keeping the museum open for longer hours, especially during the height of tourist season, in order to educate visitors about the tribe's history and cultural values.
