Log Number: MN-00-05-0015-05

The Waihona Puke Department of ALU LIKE, Inc., was established in 1985 to address the need for public library and museum services in communities identified by the U.S. Census as having a high percentage of Native Hawaiians. Programs administered by the organization include loaning a collection of Hawaiian artifacts and replicas with accompanying educational curriculum for use in public programs or by educators in Hawaiian communities, providing traveling exhibitions on Hawaiian history and culture, and organizing public programs annually in celebration of National Women's History Month and Queen Lili'uokalani's birthday. This grant will assist ALU LIKE to hire four kupuna (elders) who are cultural experts in specific subject areas to provide eight one-day workshops on ipu, kappa making, kukui, and lauhala weaving, reaching 80 participants each year. This project will also preserve the knowledge of five kupuna by interviewing them, videotaping and transcribing the interviews, and making the interviews available to the public.
