Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians
Log Number: MN-00-05-0012-05
In October 2006, the tribal members of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians will open a cultural center, the goal of which is to increase the tribe's capacity to preserve and share its culture and history. In anticipation of this event, the tribe has set aside 3,800 square feet of space at the Grand Traverse Resort to be used for exhibitions and storage of their possessions, which include canoes, baskets, quill boxes, quilts, photographs, and transcripts and tapes of more than 150 tribal elder interviews. To facilitate the opening of this museum, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians will recruit, hire, and train a part-time museum director and create a long-term strategic plan for the launch, maintenance, and growth of the cultural center.
