The Hoonah Heritage Center, which opened in May 2004, will use funding to have a scale model relief map constructed and installed in its exhibition space. The map will provide geographic and topographic information on Hoonah, the largest Tlingit village in southeast Alaska (population 860). It will illustrate the territories of the four founding clans, as well as more than 300 place names written in both Tlingit and English. Associated with approximately 20 place names will be interpretive text, artwork, and photographs designed to highlight important areas of the four Hoonah clan areas. The map will serve as an important teaching tool for community members, students, and visitors to the village as they enter the Hoonah Heritage center's exhibit hall.
