Minnesota Chippewa Tribe/Grand Portage Band
Log Number: MN-00-05-0008-05
The Grand Portage Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe is located on the remote northeastern trip of Minnesota, six miles from the Canadian border. The focus of Grand Portage history has always been linked to the fur trade, but tribal community members seek an opportunity to explore the culture and history, both past and present, of the Anishinaabe Ojibwe (Chippewa) nation in an engaging format for school-aged audiences and the general public. The purpose of this project is to develop a veterans' area within the tribe's Community Center to display "then and now" photos and biographies of veterans, genealogical charts showing who enlisted, and medals awarded to Grand Portage veterans. This grant will enable the tribe to hire a special projects technician to mount photographs, fabricate labels, and install the exhibition.
