Portland Museum of Art, ME

Purpose: Expanding Educational Services The Portland Museum of Art (PMA) will further its education efforts and increase access to its permanent collection. AXIS Online will extend the reach of the current program, AXIS (Artists eXchange Ideas with Students), using the web to provide thousands of Maine's middle school students and teachers with access to Portland Museum of Art collections and resources. The program will draw upon the success of the Portland Museum of Art's "Looking to Learn" curriculum project and the AXIS program. AXIS is currently pairing community artists with middle school students and teachers to link 19th century art and architecture to lesson plans across the curriculum, hands-on art projects, the museum's permanent collection of 19th century art and architecture and contemporary art and architecture that students experience in their community.
