Detroit Zoo

Purpose: Expanding Educational Services The Detroit Zoological Institute will expand its humane education effort with six interrelated programs that are new to the institution and that focus primarily on students and teachers. Two new outreach programs, "City Critters" and "Four Seasons with City Critters," will take the Zoo beyond its physical borders and into elementary schools. The programs will heighten awareness of the animals that share our habitats through storytelling, artwork, and role-playing. "Kids for Critters" will encourage young people to volunteer in tasks to make a difference for animals. "Humane Partners in the Classroom" will provide training for Detroit school teachers. In addition, the Zoo will update its Web site with interactive features and it will also partner with the Mosaic Youth Theatre to present a theatrical production at the zoo and in schools.
