Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Log Number: MH-252015-OMS-22

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will update its programs by applying an intersectional lens to the educational goals in alignment with their recently updated strategic plan. Project activities will include staff and volunteer training on intersectionality and selected marginalized groups that intersect with the African American Civil Rights Movement. The project team will also enrich the Legacy Youth Leadership Program curriculum with intersectional narratives, develop two archives focused on Latinx and immigrant human and civil rights struggles, update the human rights gallery, and collaborate with members of local tribes to develop a plan for the addition of a land acknowledgement marker. By recognizing that the story of civil rights struggles in the South is larger than one community, the project aims to apply an intersectional interpretive approach to help attract a greater diversity of visitors and expand the museum’s impact.
