The Image Permanence Institute, part of the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY will undertake a major research and development project aimed at creating effective disaster prevention, response, and recovery strategies for modern inkjet prints in museum collections. Inkjet prints are considerably more sensitive to water damage than traditional prints, and some inkjet print types can also significantly harm adjacent materials during water disasters. A full understanding of how these materials behave during different water damage scenarios has yet to be performed. This project will provide collection care staff with the information and tools they need to minimize risk of damage, respond efficiently during an emergency, and retrieve and stabilize exposed materials following a water emergencies.
