The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation will undertake a three-year research project examining the effects of fire extinguishing agents on cultural heritage materials. The long-term effects of exposure to the extinguishing agents will be assessed along with the ability to remove the extinguishing materials from the surfaces of cultural property. This project is intended to quantify the impact of discharging portable fire extinguisher agents on cultural resource materials and establish a scientific method for this assessment. The project results will be proposed for adoption by the National Fire Protection Association, the world’s leading advocate of fire protection and an authoritative source on public fire safety.
