The San Diego History Center will create digital preservation copies of 130 of its earliest oral history interviews that recorded the life experiences of residents who lived in San Diego in the late 19th century. The interviews are currently contained on dictabelts, which are in poor condition and have no accurate transcripts. Due to the unique and delicate quality of these dictabelts, a professional audio production and recording studio will perform the digitization work. This project will protect a valuable source of local history and the history center will be able to share these interviews with researchers, students, and the public through exhibitions, education, and public programs.
