Fashion Institute of Technology (Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology)
Log Number: MA-30-19-0686-19
The Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology will conduct its first detailed conservation survey to systematically address the possible exposure of its collections to toxic chemicals. In partnership with a contracted contaminated-object specialist, the project team will identify the toxic exposure status of 160 high-risk collection objects, document findings, and develop new and improved protocols for identifying, handling, storing, and presenting objects that are, or could be, contaminated. The museum will develop a report and guidelines on best-practices for its own use and for dissemination to small- and mid-sized museums or cultural centers with similar collections. The project will improve the museum's understanding and stewardship of its collection; protect the health and safety of diverse stakeholders who come into contact with collection objects; and educate museum staff, conservation students and faculty, and the wider conservation field about project findings.
