Michigan Department of Natural Resources (Michigan Iron Industry Museum, Michigan Historical Center)
Log Number: MA-30-19-0350-19
The Michigan Iron Industry Museum will conserve the Yankee, an 1868 steam locomotive that mechanized Michigan's iron industry. The museum will engage a conservation firm to conduct or update a conservation assessment of the locomotive and produce a treatment plan. The firm will arrange transportation for the Yankee to its workshop, carry out the treatment, and fabricate any small parts that need to be replaced. The treatment goal is to stabilize original components and replace missing and severely deteriorated components with accurate reproductions to show visitors how the Yankee looked during the period of its operation. Once conserved, the Yankee will be returned and placed on exhibit inside the museum into a building addition specifically built to house and interpret it for visitors.
