University of Rochester (Memorial Art Gallery)

Log Number: MA-30-18-0360-18

The Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester will conserve, photograph, and document works on paper by local artists, Harvey Ellis and M. Louise Stowell. A paper conservator will provide conservation treatment for 24 of the most damaged and unstable of these examples of the American Arts and Crafts movement, while almost 200 others by the same artists will be photographed by a professional photographer. The museum's curatorial staff will work on documentation throughout the two-year project, examining archival materials, contemporary exhibition reviews, and articles and essays written by the artists. They will also gather information on their creative techniques, match artworks with the proper titles, and cross-reference the works of art with their exhibition histories. The information compiled will be added into curatorial files and into the museum's collections database records which populate its online collections website.
