Gallery of Art, University of Northern Iowa will engage two paper conservators from the Midwest Art Conservation Center to conduct an item-by-item survey of the gallery's 2,249 works on paper and produce a detailed and prioritized condition report for each piece. Reflecting both conservation need and curatorial priority, the project will provide for a more thorough examination of 30 high-priority objects, resulting in full condition reports and conservation treatment proposals for these objects. The conservators will also present a Hinging and Handling Workshop for gallery staff as well as interested faculty and students during their visit. The survey will establish a professional foundation for a systematic approach to collections care that will ensure the long-term preservation of the collection. The project will also provide student employees first-hand experience with a professional art conservation survey.
