The Philadelphia Museum of Art will install compact storage shelving for its modern and contemporary design and craft furniture collections. Overcrowding and poor accessibility jeopardize many artifacts, and some objects are in non-outfitted storage spaces and hallways. The project will create an additional 1,344 square feet of shelving to safely store 550 furniture holdings and provide capacity for future acquisitions. The museum will place the collections in temporary storage, install the new compact storage system, and complete condition reporting and needed collections treatments. The project will ensure continued preservation of the museum’s European, American, and Asian design work of the 19th and 20th centuries. Better storage will increase collections accessibility, minimize object handling, and improve collection maintenance. The museum will highlight this project on its website to share best practices in preventive conservation care.
