The Academy for American Democracy is a new educational initiative of the New York Historical Society focusing on history and civics education for sixth grade New York City public school students and their teachers. Teachers will be invited to participate in the Academy's Professional Learning Community to deepen their knowledge of history and political theory. Classroom-ready resources will support engaging lesson plans. Through a free, in-depth residency program facilitated at New York Historical Society, students will examine democracy's original formation in ancient Athens; consider how the founders adapted that system of government for the United States; and trace how and why American democracy has changed in the centuries since. Students will acquire knowledge and tools to meaningfully participate in civic life.
