The Connecticut Children’s Museum will partner with the Eli Whitney Museum, Yale Center for British Art, and eight community organizations to address five community challenges and needs: 1) low youth literacy levels; 2) limited out-of-school family learning opportunities; 3) educational inequality (including disparities in access to out-of-school family learning); 4) limited connection between community-based family learning programs and museums; and 5) outdated strategies to market family learning programs to underserved families. The Museum-Community Round-Trip Project will promote the museums to underserved families and encourage them to make “round trips” to the three anchor museums. Families will receive a child’s guide to the museums, free passes, museum-themed children’s books, and information on museum events. The project will train partner organizations to provide family programming and enhance each museum’s capacity to attract and accommodate visitors through new tools and strategies, including technology to reach underserved audiences.
