The History Center of Niagara Country will lead a collaborative effort with eight cultural organizations in the Buffalo-Niagara region to establish the “Penney Trail.” The project will feature virtual, physical, and traveling exhibits of about 10,000 artifacts, correspondence, travel slides, photographs, art, travel journals, and other documents pertaining to Western New York history from the collections of philanthropist Dr. Rand Penney. The project will increase access to Western New York history and culture, establish a strong regional network for additional collaboration and research sharing, and increase the individual and collective technical capacity of participating organizations, particularly for mobile access and social media. The project will create thematic interpretation; a database of Penney Trail artifacts available online through the New York Heritage portal; exhibits throughout the region; publication of a print and electronic “Penney Trail Guide”; a digital gallery/website trail of exhibits; and a mobile app.
