The New Bedford Whaling Museum will expand and enhance its Youth Apprentice Program that helps participating students graduate high school, gain professional skills, and successfully navigate college. The program is a direct response to the needs of youth who have limited opportunities for out-of-school activities or part-time jobs where they can witness the critical relationship between continuing their education and developing the skills essential to workplace success. The afterschool immersion program includes extensive training and mentoring for youth and involves apprentices in projects such as primary research, web content development, public programming, and exhibit design. The museum will use IMLS funds to expand the program with wrap-around services including a social service function for students and families; technical assistance and coaching for college entrance; and alumni services to help apprentices sustain relationships and complete college. The project will help economically disadvantaged high school students achieve academic and workplace success, and serve as leaders and peer role models.
