The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco will create the Artist Studio program to increase artist-visitor interaction, raise artist visibility, and increase visitor participation in the conversation around and creation of art. The museum will invite at least 20 artists from dance, theater, performance art, poetry, literary art, media, film, and visual art to participate in yearlong residencies. The artists will promote their work virtually on museum-hosted micro-sites for twelve months and be in residence for one month in the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum’s Kimball Gallery, presenting work tied to special exhibits and/or permanent collections. The program will integrate artist-driven projects into the museum and give audiences new opportunities to experience, understand, and appreciate art. The program will also forge stronger partnerships with the local arts community and support artists with opportunities to attract new audiences and exhibit work at a major museum.
