The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis will enhance the training and development of its operations staff (i.e., non–gallery related staff) in “family learning” principles, objectives, and strategies. The museum will infuse its existing staff training and professional development program with enhanced training in family learning through a new “experience mapping” initiative—a process of identifying visitor expectations at various touch points throughout the museum experience and then putting in place systems and protocols to ensure the staff meet those expectations. The resulting Professional Development Program (PDP) will strengthen the place of family learning in its professional development program beyond exhibit and content staff, thus increasing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of museum staff to serve the one million children and families who visit each year.
