The National Building Museum’s exhibit “House & Home” explores the fundamental place of residential architecture in our national built environment. The exhibit will examine the connections between the physical structure of the “house,” including geographic location, architecture, construction materials, floor plan, and how Americans have created “homes.” The museum will provide visitors with a vocabulary and framework to understand the role of housing and community in American culture. “House & Home” will showcase photographs, models, media presentations, full-scale touchable wall sections, and artifacts. The final gallery in the permanent part of the exhibition, “Home and Community,” will bring together the themes of the entire exhibition and will give visitors an intimate look at six American communities. “House & Home” will provide audiences with the tools to think critically about our built environment and our ever-expanding and changing national architectural heritage.
