Morehead State University (Kentucky Folk Art Center)

The Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead State University, the only art museum in Appalachian Kentucky, will use this grant to establish a comprehensive arts education program for Kentucky schools. Primary project components include redesigning tabletop exhibitions on folk art, traditional crafts, and traditional music that can travel to schools; updating a digital iPod audio tour/programming content (funded by a previous Institute of Museum and Library Services grant); providing in-school performances by storytellers and traditional musicians; coordinating a narrative photography project for high school students; providing summer art camps; and offering customized museum visits for schools. Several aspects of the program are broadly based, serving to familiarize students with state-mandated core content areas, while other program activities focus on working with smaller groups of students over extended periods of time. The museum anticipates that this program will provide services to approximately 10,000 students each year.
