The L.C. Bates Museum will begin a two-year project called “Engaging Rural Fourth Grade Children in Environmental Science.” The project is designed to provide neighboring, mostly low-income, Maine children and their families with opportunities for needed environmental education. The project will bring a series of 12 museum natural history programs to 38 classes in 11 area schools, present eight “Wild” Museum Family field trips for participating children and their families, and lend five exploration boxes to teachers. The program’s content will meet the Maine Learning Results Standards and reach over 1,470 fourth graders. This project, based on the results of a successful pilot program and a similar after-school program, seeks to provide needed community services that support lifelong learning.
